Australian Princess is over

Over the past few weeks I’ve found myself (with Kim) drifting into the psuedo-royal zone of Australian Princess. I’m really not sure why I like some reality shows and not others but I suspect it has to do with the niceness factor. Whenever I saw Race Around the World, all I seemed to notice was agressive people bullying their way around, scamming favours. It really turned me off. Survivor seemed to reward the worst traits and behaviours in people. At least Big Brother didn’t seem so nasty. For Princess, take 12 aspiring Australian chicks, put them up in nice hotels and introduce them to English society people, teach them to make and serve tea, make smalltalk, and groom themselves obsessively. Introduce them to rich, poncy guys and supply modest amounts of alcohol. Watch them mildly disgrace themselves, fall head over heels in love, and say “omy gawd” at the sight of each new castle, ballroom or fancy car. It’s hard to say how many of the girls are just going along for the free goodies and a good time, and how many are totally serious about being a “real” princess. The society people come off looking shallow and materialistic, the girls when ousted one by one, all come away sobbing and looking massively insecure. One girl after a couple of wines, tells the dinner party crowd that she’s a stripper in real life and immediately drops like a stone in the judges eyes. Within a day or two she’s got a couple of the young guys all het up for action. Good TV! princess1.gif
